Since the 2006-2007 school year, the St Mary Parish Public School District have used the Fast ForWord programs with their students. They began with a group of eight schools, and three years later the whole district was using the program, with almost 10,000 students having benefited from this intervention by 2011.

"Our challenge wasn't necessarily that our programs were ineffective. It was that we weren't meeting the individual needs of students," said Don Aguillard, District Superintendent. “We have seen a marked increase in student performance ... it’s exciting to see significant academic gains in these schools in a little as two years.” This study shows impressive longitudinal results on the Louisiana (LEAP) which is administered annually throughout the state (similar to Australia's NAPLAN testing).

The graph above shows the percentage of year four students each year who achieved at or above benchmark on their LEAP English Language Arts test (LEAP is a state-wide achievement test similar to Australia's NAPLAN). By implementing Fast ForWord programs with all year 4 students, the district improved from 53% to 78% of students above benchmark, and the district surpassed an improving state average within 2 years.

What's even more exciting is that this learnign acceleration didn't just occur in reading and language arts - there were also significant improvements in science, maths and social studies as shown above. In addition, the number of students requiring special education services decreased by17% over a 5 year period.
