Since the 2006-2007 school year, the St Mary Parish Public School District have used the Fast ForWord programs with their students. They began with a group of eight schools, and three years later the whole district was using the program, with almost 10,000 students having benefited from this intervention by 2011. |
The graph above shows the percentage of year four students each year who achieved at or above benchmark on their LEAP English Language Arts test (LEAP is a state-wide achievement test similar to Australia's NAPLAN). By implementing Fast ForWord programs with all year 4 students, the district improved from 53% to 78% of students above benchmark, and the district surpassed an improving state average within 2 years.
What's even more exciting is that this learnign acceleration didn't just occur in reading and language arts - there were also significant improvements in science, maths and social studies as shown above. In addition, the number of students requiring special education services decreased by17% over a 5 year period.
